New Vision posted 2 March 2004.

In 1993, our cities had fifty reported gang-related shootings and two deaths. In 1994, we had six shootings due to gang activity. At the close of 1995, police estimated a number equal to or lower than that of 1994. What happened to make the numbers drop from fifty shootings to six? In 1993, Christians all over our cities were praying for the young people of Bryan-College Station. City-wide prayer meetings lifted the name of Jesus and cried out for our children. A ministry was born out of this unity in prayer ? Save Our Streets Ministries. What happened to make gang activity plummet in our cities? God heard the prayers of His people (II Chronicles 7:14) and is actively moving in our streets. J.J. Ramirez started SOS Ministries as a result of a tent revival in November, 1993. For about a year previously, he had been ministering on the streets, never looking to do more than bring the awareness of Christ to gang members and leaders, drug dealers and drug addicts. Having been a gang member until the age of 24, as well as leading the life of a drug addict, J.J. has the knowledge of how and why many of today1s young men and women have chosen to become part of this culture. Although J.J. and SOS Ministries have not sought recognition, the Lord has opened many doors of opportunity to bring the message of hope, love and salvation to those who most feel are beyond redemption.

SOS Ministries has a volunteer staff that works around the clock to help break the captives free from the bondages of the only life they have every known.

This ministry is supported, both financially and prayerfully, and is sponsored by or in cooperation with over 20 churches in the Brazos Valley. We appreciate this opportunity to share about what God is doing through SOS Ministries. Please feel free to call J.J. Ramirez at 775-5357. Let J.J. know if you would like to be added to the newsletter mailing list as well.
