Freedom Fest makes joyful noise

By Kelli Levey
Eagle Staff Writer

The S.O.S. Ministries and about a dozen area churches are sponsoring Freedom Fest 2001, which will feature Nicky Cruz and other entertainers.

The event is part revival, part block party. It will start Friday with a 6 p.m. prayer service in the Palace Theater, then resume at 6 p.m. Saturday with a street festival in Downtown Bryan. Both events are free.

About 2,000 chairs will be set up in the streets of Downtown Saturday afternoon, and members of local low-rider clubs have been invited to bring their cars.

"We want them to be able to change the image of low-rider," said J.J. Ramirez, director of Save Our Streets Ministries. "We'd like them to turn that around and send a positive message to the kids. Whatever they're into, the kids want to get into."

In case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to the Bryan Civic Auditorium at the intersection of Coulter Drive and 32nd Street. Houston-based Christian rap artist Lil' Raskull will start the show, then Cruz will speak. He wrote Run Baby Run and The Cross and the Switchblade. More than 8 million copies of Run Baby Run, which tells of his journey "from hate, power, and survival to forgiveness and redemption," have been sold in the United States and millions more in more than 40 languages have been sold worldwide. According to Cruz's Web site, his story is required reading in many European schools.

Other scheduled entertainers are Brazos Community Choir and S.O.S. Ministries Drama.

About a dozen churches and individuals have donated more than $12,000 for the event. At the event, 100 trained lay minister counselors will available Saturday. S.O.S. Ministries and various churches will offer follow-up counseling and Bible study afterward.
